    Jumping ship...
So at the urging of Elias, Lee, and Ben, I've set up my own blog at http://wingerz.com/blog. I've been meaning to change the template for it, but realized that it may take me a while to get around to it. I may still post here occasionally.

The sun finally came out for a while this evening!

    ...

I hate the Pistons because they beat the Lakers a few years ago in the playoffs. Same goes for the Spurs. And of course I hate the Suns too, after this season. I will hate them even more if they manage to beat the Clippers. I'm not a huge fan of the Heat and Lee is a Nets fan, so that pretty much determines who I've been cheering for in the second round. Unfortunately, the Nets lost this evening.

    ...

New Super Mario Bros. is awesome. It looks great, but more importantly, it just feels right. Mario looks pretty cute when he's wearing a turtle shell.

    E3
Been following video game-related blogs pretty closely over the past few days as the Electronic Entertainment Expo is going on in Los Angeles. Things have changed a lot since my earliest video gaming days, when I'd have to wait for the next issue of Nintendo Power or EGM to read about the big E3 announcements. In recent years things have been better, with news coming through the big gaming sites. Now I can get a lot of different viewpoints from various blogs.

    Looking most forward to:

Super Paper Mario (gc) - Loved the art style and graphical effects of the previous games.

Zelda (wii) - After numerous delays, people inside Nintendo are calling this the best, most beautiful Zelda ever.

Super Mario Galaxy (wii) - New Mario game, getting lots of praise from bloggers. Gravity model looks pretty interesting.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (wii) - I'm going to play every match as the Nintendog.

    Gotta love streaming video.

I've kind of been glossing over the PS3 ($600!?!?) and Xbox360 news. The screenshots look amazing, but the Wii is just too intriguing - I find myself wondering how the controller will be used in new games. Really looking forward to getting my hands on the controller to see what it feels like. Sounds like the overall buzz has been quite positive, which is a great sign for Nintendo.

    Random happenings...
Basketball: Jen upgraded our cable for the NBA Playoffs. Followed Cavs-Wizards and Lakers-Suns pretty closely in Round 1. The Lakers got destroyed in Game 7 by the Suns. I thought they were going to win the series at home during Game 6, but that didn't happen. End of Game 5 will stay with me for a long time. Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come in future years.

Softball: Our team is 3-1 so far, and we've had a great time playing. Jen and I have been playing catcher and 2nd base, but today we both spent some time in right field. Beautiful day to be outside!

Grill: Jess & Cy got me The Cook's Illustrated Guide To Grilling And Barbecue. Made some pretty-looking rib-eyes tonight for dinner.

DS: Have not been playing much recently, but for a while I was addicted to online Tetris DS. Everyone should get a DS Lite when it comes out on June 11. Looking forward to the uncreatively named New Super Mario Bros.

E3: Electronic Entertainment Expo is this week, and Nintendo is supposed to make one more big announcement about the Wii. Apparently the newest issue of Time has some coverage of what it's like. Time Magazine probably isn't a great place to get gaming news, but it still sounds really promising.

    Google Calendar QuickAdd Plugin
Elias wrote a Firefox plugin that lets you Quick-Add to the Google Calendar (even when your current browser window isn't pointing at the calendar) by hitting ctrl-;. For those of you who haven't played around with it yet, Quick-Add let's you add items to your calendar in pseudo-natural language (for example, "dinner at 7pm tomorrow").

    Temporary pets...
Over the weekend, we babysat Jen's coworker's two rabbits.

Pumpkin on the right, Pooh on the left. Pumpkin was the adventurous and pushy one. She would grab carrots out of my hand and take them into the corner to gobble. Pooh ate patiently from my hand, but once Pumpkin finished she would come over and try to steal the rest of his food.

Fortunately, the bunnies made it through the weekend safely.

    Weekend in Philadelphia...
We arrived here Friday evening and spent all day yesterday at Wharton. I decided to tag along with Jen to get a feel for the atmosphere of the campus and to meet some of her (potential) new classmates. It's actually been a lot of fun - of all the people I've run into, most have been a lot of fun to talk to. In fact, across both business school visits I've only run into one person who really struck me as a gunner. Been seeing some familiar faces, including an ex-co-worker and former classmates (who I'd seen around campus but never met in college). The farewell dinner last night was in the natural history museum, and they had tables set up among the dinosaur bones. In true business school fashion, several of us got up to tour the museum before leaving, but only made it about 20 feet away before we started talking to other admits. Never got to see the frogs exhibit.

Going to have a tough decision to make in the next few weeks, but at least we like both places.

    Dreamhosed...
Yesterday dreamhost just upgraded to a new version of rails, taking doGooder down with it.

While fixing the problem (by following directions to temporarily revert to Rails 1.0), it was kind of lonely:

    Late night madness...
Wow, two awesome late games tonight. I can't believe UCLA came all the way back after that terrible, terrible first half. Incredible. Even though I'll be tired at work tomorrow, I do enjoy staying up to watch with several IM conversations going at the same time. Looking forward to eight more games over the next few days. :P

I've been playing around with Ruby on Rails. I've been torn between adding features and optimizations and sending out the link to see if people will actually use it. Curiosity wins.

    Sloan Admit Weekend...
I went with Jen to some of the Sloan Admit Weekend festivities and really enjoyed it. Met some really interesting, outgoing, accomplished, friendly, approachable people, including one person who is trying to use business school to get into video game production and another who turned out to be my upstairs neighbor's co-worker. Sloan (and probably Stanford as well) must be a technology-oriented business school student's dream, with CSAIL, the Media Lab, and the rest of MIT all within a few blocks (along with a ton of local biotechs that they have relationships with). Seemed like every other student was working with a lab on campus to launch a startup. There were also tons of significant others, both hosting and visiting, and even a few children running around. Apparently some of the SO's attend club meetings, so if Jen ends up going to Sloan maybe I can enjoy some of the benefits without paying tuition.

    Ping pong...
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/693/693369p1.html - video game ping pong, brought to you by Rockstar games.

And, yes, you will be able to hold the racquet in both styles.

Seems funny to bring something that's already pretty accessible into the digital world.

    Winter Olympics...
I promised Ben a post about the Winter Olympics. Jen and I have been watching a ton, despite tracking results online during the day. At work we have to be careful about what we say since Ben tries to avoid finding out what happens until he watches the day's events when he gets home.

So far I've been most amused by the team pursuit and short track relay events.

    Snowboarding!
Yesterday we went to Wachusett with Jess, Cy, Nick, and Ceida. Cy patiently taught Nick and me how to snowboard, and I spent the day tripping and falling down the beginner slopes. Had a great time, though just about every part of my body is sore as all hell today.

Went to sleep early, but not before playing an hour of Trauma Center, the DS surgeon game. It's actually got a story and some amusing dialog. Best moment so far: The nurse screaming "Oh my God!" upon opening up one of the patients and finding a very inflamed small intestine.

    Games with a Purpose...
Heard about this from [info]cychan (who saw it here). The essence of it is taking tasks that are hard for computers to do (like image labelling)and reformulating them in the form of fun web games to get people to complete them.

The ESP game matches you up with a random player and shows both of you the same image. You and your partner type in words (hidden from one another) until there is a match - then you both get points and move onto the next image.

Watched all of the research talk movie. It's interesting and also pretty amusing.
